Dave McNeil called and suggested that we go for a little ride for lunch. Dave knows almost every road in Washington and Oregon and I always say “yes” when he invites me along. I joined him at Mt Baker Harley-Davidson (previously named “Bellingham Harley-Davidson”) where he had run into Ed Daniels and invited him along for the ride and lunch. Good call—Ed made for a good riding companion, and he regaled us with tales from Chicago and California over lunch. We took Chuckanut Blvd south, through Edison and Padilla Bay area and onward across the Skagit Flats to the Conway Tavern for some of their burgers. (If you go, choose the “Justin” burger from their huge array of offerings…) Enroute, we saw lots of bald-eagles, ducks, geese, hunters and the usual great scenery—“usual” but never boring! And, really, I will try to remember to take a camera along on future ventures.
After lunch we crossed the freeway headed for highway 9 where we turned north, stopping at the Acme Store for a pit-stop and coffee. Then, on to Mt. Baker Highway and to Smith Road to Ferndale via Axton Road, where we waived Ed off onto the freeway heading North to his home in Point Roberts. (For those of you not from here, Ed has to cross the Canadian Border twice to get to this sort of isolated part of Whatcom County—check it out on a map!)
A fine way to spend and afternoon…
